Anthropic · The Consumer-LLM Bloom
Claude 2
Anthropic's first publicly competitive release. 100K context when GPT-4 had 8K.
By C.W. Jameson · Published 19 May 2026 · Last reviewed 19 May 2026
Claude 2 arrived in July 2023 with a 100,000-token context window at a time when GPT-4 was limited to 8,192 tokens. The gap closed within a year on both sides, but Claude 2 established Anthropic as a serious frontier competitor rather than a research lab. Constitutional AI training made its refusals more specific than the era's average.
