OpenAI Operator
OpenAI's browser-only autonomous agent. Lives in a sandboxed Chrome, performs tasks, returns results.
By C.W. Jameson · Published 19 May 2026 · Last reviewed 19 May 2026
Operator was OpenAI's first commercial browser-use agent, scoped narrower than Anthropic's Computer Use — browser only, sandboxed, with explicit task framing. The narrowness was the point: by ruling out the rest of the OS, OpenAI made reliability tractable.
